Things to Do for Festivus &Ndash; For The Rest of Us
Believe it or not, Festivus, a non-commercialized holiday celebrated on Dec. 23, is real – or really celebrated, rather. It was created in 1966 by writer Daniel O’Keefe, author and a former editor at “Reader’s Digest,” to commemorate his wife’s and his first date and escape other holiday pressures. His son, a “Seinfeld” writer also named Daniel, brought Festivus into the mainstream by incorporating the day into the Dec. 18, 1997 episode “The Strike.”
